   On November 12th, 2001, American Airlines Flight 587 took off from JFK International Airport, but shortly after departure, the excessive use of the plane's rudder caused the entire vertical tail fin to detach. The plane lost control and crashed into Belle Harbor, exploding into flames and tragically killing all 260 passengers and crew members on board, as well as 5 residents on the ground for a total of 265 fatalities.
